The “FATA - Magic Needle”, a fully automatic treatment apparatus, won a Gold Medal at the 38th International Fair of Eureka World Inventions at Brussels, Belgium in 1989. The apparatus was developed using the principles of Chinese traditional auriotherapy (acupuncture of the ear) and modern electronic technology. It has been used extensively in eight large hospitals in China with promising results.

Principle of the FATA.

Acupuncture has been in used in China for over two thousand years and has gained wide acceptance in the West. Its basis lies in the recognition that good health requires the correct balance of electrical energy (“chi” as described by the Chinese). The “chi” flows through the body via a system of meridians or channels, and acupuncture points are points with electrical resistance along these cannels each of which corresponds to a body organ or system. Irregular energy flow along these channels may cause the malfunction of internal organs. Acupuncture aims to restore the harmonious balance of this energy flow thereby relieving symptoms of the resultant imbalance. All the internal organs have corresponding points on the external ear in which the channels of the whole body converge. Applying acupuncture to the ears is as effective as applying it to the appropriate points elsewhere in the body.

FATA employs the principle that electrical resistance of the acupuncture points along the channels affected is lower than the surrounding skin and the electric current seeks out these points on the skin and sends electrical impulses flowing along these channels. Electrodes in close apposition to the external ear select these points automatically. The skin is not punctured, and there are no side effects. The user does not need to have any knowledge of acupuncture points, and the only action he or she needs to take is the adjustment of the intensity of the electrical impulse according to his or her tolerance.
